At Hati.my, we often receive requests to adopt and care for animals. Owners who migrate may not be able to take their loved pets with them while some other requests involve suggestions for Hati to 'rescue' abandoned animals or ones that may be living in abusive conditions.
As a pet lover myself, I would love to adopt and care for these animals, but unfortunately Hati does not have the facilities or resources to do so. Often, we advise owners to give them up to other pet loving friends, or an animal shelter. The latter option may not be the most suitable as shelters are run on public donations, and may be overcrowded. I've spoken to other animal shelter volunteers who sometimes share that it is better to leave street cats alone rather than to gather them and lock them up in a shelter. Street cats appear to be more resilient and independent. It is important though to have them neutered, so if volunteers can spend some energy to get this done, it will help in controlling the street cat population in the city.
It's not that simple with dogs, I feel reluctant to recommend that dogs be given up in shelters as they require different attention. All I can say is that, if there is no choice but to give up your pet, try persuading other animal loving friends, neighbours and families if they can care for your animal.

Hati.org.my rebrand
One year after my last post, it's been an exciting year! Apologies for 'disappearing', we've been busy at Hati, refreshing it to work for you, our donors and partners.
Finally after much paperwork, Hati is now registered as a portal under the Touching Hearts Welfare Society Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. It took us some (uncountable) months and lots of printing of documents to put this together, but we could not have done it without the help of members of our founding team, our families and Tandemic.:)
As we make our transition into a society, I realise our responsibility has grown. Being governed by a strict constitution and accounting regulations, I realise Hati's now 'grown up'. As our volunteer pool grows, so does our reach and we're humbled by the support we've received over the last few years.
Personally, I hope to be able to serve our audiences well, we do our best, amidst the crazy projects and full time work we get ourselves into.:)
Looking forward to another exciting year with the new Hati! Stay tuned, for updates.

Quit the jargon
Back from Brussels in stormy and warm Kuala Lumpur.
A big thank you to our hosts and friends in Brussels and from all around the world. Good to have met new faces and made reconnections.
My take on Millennium Development Goals - quit the jargon.
As a journalist, and more of a communicator, we're used to stripping down rhetoric messages for the "layman", not to assume our readers or viewers are less educated, but to keep it simple, so the message is clear and understood.
No criticism at agencies that do good work towards the achieving the MDGs - just to keep it straightforward and ensure that we are on the same page.
My point is that good work by communities, agencies and individuals get drowned in jargon and terminology used by politicians, policymakers and sometimes ourselves.
For me, a place to start? Avoid big words to tell stories with big meanings.
